01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
One pleasure of omakase is discovering a dish you might not have chosen for yourself. Fuan lists omakase courses with eight, nine or ten dishes; one diner chose the eight-dish course and enjoyed trying food they would not usually order. The nine-dish course includes a starter, sashimi, fried dish, vinegared dish and fruit, followed by rice, soup and pickles. The eight-dish course adds hassun, an assortment of seasonal appetisers, while the ten-dish course adds a steamed dish to the nine-dish selection. The choice is about more than the number of dishes: you can also consider the meal’s progression and whether you would like one more course.
Diners who have enjoyed a course at dinner have commented on the variety of dishes and the memorable presentation and tableware. One person especially liked firefly squid. They had been a little unsure about trying it, but enjoyed its soft texture. Omakase suits an evening when you are in the mood for unexpected discoveries. For seasonal fish, there is also hamo otoshi: one diner described enjoying this summery Kyoto dish with plum paste. Beer and other alcoholic drinks are available to accompany the meal.
At lunchtime, a set meal or rice bowl is another option. One diner described the daily set in detail, mentioning simmered karasugarei (marbled flounder), taro and fried tofu simmered together, and the portion of rice. Another ordered tekkadon, a bowl of rice topped with tuna. It offers a different way to enjoy a fish-focused meal from the evening omakase courses. Lunch is served from 11時30分 to 14時30分, and dinner from 17時 to 22時. Closed on Sundays.
